Taxi Portsmouth Nh - PORTSMOUTH — Amid calls for more taxis on weekend mornings, when drunken customers leave downtown bars, two local cabbies are accused of leaving medallions to operate cabs when taxis dedicated to medallions are not.
Taxi companies deny this accusation, the newest member of the Taxi Commission, John Palreiro, owner of Great Bay Taxi. Palreiro does not have a medallion to operate in Portsmouth, but applied to the Taxi Commission on Monday, but was told he did not have one. The commission said, however, that it would give him a medallion if it was in stock. Palreiro filed a written complaint with the city on Aug. 13, saying the two local taxi companies are violating city ordinances that require the medallions to be returned to the city within 30 days after the taxis in question leave the road.

A former Rockingham Livery employee, Palreiro says Rockingham lifted the cab of a 2000 Dodge Caravan in May, removed the headlights and overhead lights, and passed it off as a "personal vehicle." In his written complaint to the city, Palreiro alleged that he was given city medallion number 13, which was not transferred to a new truck placed on the road as a taxi.
Instead, Rockingham Livery claims to have acquired a new number 20 medallion for its replacement taxis. Meanwhile, the number 13 medallion "is still being given to these retirees," Palreiro complained, demanding that the company be fined.
Scott Gerrato, owner of Rockingham Livery, called the allegations "sinful", and that he has six medallions in six taxis he operates.
He said the number 13 medallion was returned to the city when a truck ran off the road and then the number 20 was awarded for the variable destruction.
